Hey everybody! My name is Francis Carlota, and welcome to Thoughts of a Filipino Slugga, my first sports blog bringing you knowledgeable sports content! As my first post, allow me to reintroduce myself.
My name is Francis Carlota. I'm a 23 year old Filipino-American from Memphis, TN and currently lives in San Diego, CA. I’m in my second year of law school at California Western School of Law and President of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association there. I’m passionate about social justice and advocating for underrepresented communities, which is why I also intern with the Public Interest Advocacy Collaborative. I’m also a big hip hop fan and love what great rappers can do with words. I've written and performed slam poetry since I was 14 as well. While I consider myself a man of many talents, I love sports and take pride in being a well informed sports fan who lacks any ignorant sports opinions. My goal after law school is to work in sports as either an agent or general counsel for a team. But my shoot for the moon, holy sh*t this would be amazing goal is to be an NBA GM. While I follow damn near every sport, basketball is my passion, and most of my articles will be basketball related. But I'll definitely write about a wide-array of sports to appeal to all sports fans and have good friends of mine who are passionate about sports contribute as well.
Why is my blog called Thoughts of a Filipino Slugga? @FilipinoSlugga is my twitter name I made when I was 13. While I love twitter, there is only so much I can say about sports, and I always have something to say.
Why am I doing this blog? I'm doing it for my Dad, Lupo T. Carlota. It’s such a cliché thing for a father and son to bond over, but sports, more specifically basketball, keep our relationship strong. My father grew up at the height of World War II amidst bombings and chaos. He had one son in the Philippines, named Moses, then immigrated to America in the late 60s and had another son named Oliver. The three of them moved all over this country and finally settled in the city I call home in the 80s, Memphis, TN. During this time, the University of Memphis Tigers were a powerhouse basketball team. They made 7 NCAA tournaments and won their conference 3 times. Those teams made my Dad fall in love with the Tigers, and he has loved them ever since. Fast forward to today, and this Tigers team is one of the favorites to win the national title for the first time since 2008. When the season draws near, I’ll have a whole piece on what it would mean for me, my Dad, and my city. But I would be remiss if I didn't properly dedicate this blog properly to my Dad.
Enjoy the content, and thank you for reading!
